Athlete Injuries and Points
Estimated Reading Time: 2 MinutesAthlete Injuries and Points
When an athlete is injured and unable to participate, they may be able to apply for injury protection to limit the negative change in their points. This is often called a “point freeze” but points are not frozen, they just don’t get impacted as much when on injury protection.
Generally speaking, you can only have participated in a limited number of competitions during the season, and your injury has to keep you out of competition for a majority of the season.
Athletes must maintain their membership and FIS registration to maintain their points while on injury protection - this includes background screening for those who were 17 during the season and turned 18 prior to the end of the membership year.
A new application is required for any successive years an athlete might be out - it will not carry over.
The FIS deadline to apply for injury protection is April 30th, there are no exceptions to this deadline. Applications need to be submitted to jeff.weinman@usskiandsnowboard.org as early as possible to ensure this deadline can be met.
All applications require a doctor’s letter that includes the athlete’s name, date of injury, a description of the injury, and an approximate amount of time the athlete will be out of competition.
Alpine: alpine athletes can apply for protection for both their national and FIS points. More information can be found at this link including a form for national points and the process for FIS points - be sure to check each tab on the sheet.
Cross Country: cross country athletes can apply for protection only for FIS points - there is no national points injury protection. Download this form and return it to jeff.weinman@usskiandsnowboard.org, along with a doctor’s letter so that there is enough time for review and forwarding to FIS before the April 30 deadline.
